Full on powder day.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For Today- 12/22: We are waking up to a full on powder day with the resort reporting 10 inches new and regional radar showing a continued consistent stream of moisture dropping into our area. This will mean another 3-6 through the day before we start see this clear. So far we have been spared the colder side of this and a lot of the wind but this will change as the current wave starts to move out. Expect slow travel today and plan accordingly.
Temperatures: We stayed much warmer than expected with Crested Butte holding to 25 overnight and 27 for Gunnison. Highs will stay steady and will likely drop later this afternoon. Look for lows tonight dropping to close to 0 with colder windchills well below 0.
Outlook: We stayed on the warmer southern end of this system and came up a couple inches short of the snow to our north but with the same water content. This means heavy snow that may bond to older snow but will likely force an avalanche cycle. Don’t even think about the backcountry without checking the Avalanche Center’s report. This snow is a great shot in the arm for conditions but be smart. We will see snow tapering off into Tuesday with colder temperatures as we clear. This ridge will give us sunny skies through Wednesday but we will see another round moving in for Christmas that promises another 3-6.
